Nat Shilkret

 Nathaniel Shilkret-[ur.25.12.1889r w Nowym Jorku-zm. 18.02.1982r],amerykański kompozytor,dyrygent,klarnecista,pianista i dyrektor muzyczny wytwórni płytowych [Victor, RKO i MGM]. Urodził się w rodzinie imigrantów austriackich.

 

Już jako dziecko koncertował z New York Boys' Orchestra,w okresie od 7 do 13-tu lat,grając solowe partie na klarnecie.Póżniej jako dwudziestolatek był członkiem najlepszej nowojorskiej organizacji zrzeszającej New York Philharmonic Society , New York Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra, Russian Symphony Orchestra, Victor Herbert's Orchestra, Arnold Volpe's Orchestra, Sousa's Grand Concert Band, Arthur Pryor's Band, i Edwin Franko Goldman's Band. Towarzyszył także jako akompaniator wielu gwiazdom minn. słynnej Isadorze Duncan.
 

W 1915r przystąpił do Victor Talking Machine Company [póżniej RCA Victor],zostając w niedługim czasie kierownikiem departamentu,a w 1926r dyrektorem w tej wytwórni.Sporządził tysiące nagrań,prawdopodobnie najwięcej niż ktokolwiek inny w historii muzyki.Szacuje się ,że sprzedaż jego płyt przekroczyła 50 mln egzemplarzy.Był dyrygentem podczas wielu inowacyjnych sesji,minn. podczas pierwszych komercyjnych nagrań metodą elektryczną w 1931r.Prowadził też orkiestrę podczas nagrywania słynnego poematu symfonicznego George Gershwina "Amerykanin w Paryżu" w 1929r.
 

 

Był też jedną z wczesnych gwiazd radiowych występując w ponad 3000 audycji pomiędzy 1925 i 1941r,w tym jako dyrygent w The Eveready Hour,uważanym za pierwszy komercyjny show radiowy.Praktycznie większość ówczesnych sław musicalowych nagrywała i występowała z jego orkiestrą.W jej składzie przewinęło się wielu wybitnych osobistości jak:Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Glenn Miller i Artie Shaw. George Gershwin, Jascha Heifetz, Mischa Elman i Andrés Segovia to muzycy grający pod jego batutą.
 

Skomponował i zaaranżował tysiące utworów.Jego najsławniejszą kompozycją był utwór The Lonesome Road, nagrany oryginalnie przez Gene Austina,a póżniej przez Julesa Bledsoe i wykorzystany w filmie Show Boat .Jego kompozycja Jeannine, I Dream of Lilac Time wykonywana przez ponad stu artystów [Louis Armstrong, Skitch Henderson, Guy Lombardo, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, John McCormack, Mitch Miller, Hugo Montenegro, The Platters] została sprzedana w dwumilionowym nakładzie.Concerto for Trombone wykonywała New York Symphony Orchestra pod dyrekcją Leopolda Stokowskiego.
 

Shilkret przenosi się w 1935r do Los Angeles ,gdzie tworzy muzykę filmową i sprawuje pieczę jako dyrektor muzyczny w hollywodzkich produkcjach wytwórni RKO [1935-1937] i MGM [1942-1946r].Ma udział w Mary of Scotland (1936), Swing Time (1936), The Plough and the Stars, i Shall We Dance? (1937) oraz kilku obrazach z Laurelem i Hardym.Otrzymuje nominację do Oscara za muzykę do filmu Winterset z 1936r.Od 1946r do połowy lat 50-tych tworzy muzykę do filmów krótkometrażowych w wytwórni RKO-Pathe.Mieszka razem ze swoim synem w Nowym Jorku aż do swojej śmierci w 1982r.
