Połowa wybitnego amerykańskiego duetu kompozytorskiego okresu powojennego ,Burt Bacharach-kompozytor i Hal David-autor tekstów,która zwykłym piosenkom nadała artystyczną finezję.Eleganckie melodie i błyskotliwa aranżacja Bacharacha,teksty Davida niezwykle wyszykane i dojrzałe,osiągały poetycki wdzięk,niezrównane w swoim romantyżmie i rozdzierającym serce sarkażmie.
Hal David urodzony 25 maja 1921 roku na Brooklynie był młodszym bratem musicalowego kompozytora Macka Davida.Zanim spotkał Bacharacha w siedzibie Brill Building przy Famous Paramount Music Company w 1957r miał już napisanych kilka hitów-"American Beauty Rose," "Broken Hearted Melody" i "Bell Bottom Blues".Duet szybko stworzył swój pierwszy hit,"The Story of My Life," ,którą wykonywał Marty Robbins,a rok póżniej ,"Magic Moments " przebój Perry Como.
Mimo pierwszych sukcesów David i Bacharach współpracowali ze sobą tylko sporadycznie,przez następnych kilka lat David tworzył ze swoimi poprzednimi partnerami,obok nowych takich jak; Bob Hilliard, Sherman Edwards i Lee Pockriss. Podczas pracy z zespołem Drifters,David i Bacharach odkryli talent Dionne Warwick,wokalistki sesyjnej ,pomagając jej w podpisaniu kontraktu nagraniowego z Scepter Records.Rozpoczęła mocnym uderzeniem w postaci singla "Don't Make Me Over," wychodząc na światło dzienne nie tylko jako muza kompozytorskiego duetu,ale jako finwezyjna interpretatorka ich piosenek;czarując niepowtarzalną mieszanką intymności i łatwością interpretacji dramaturgii tekstów Davida.
W tym czasie obaj twórcy skupili się na wzajemnej współpracy,pisząc minn. dla Bobby Vintona ("Blue on Blue"), Gene Pitney'a ("Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa"), Warwick ( "Anyone Who Had a Heart") i Jacka Jonesa ("Wives and Lovers").Przez całą dekadę lat 60-tych pisali hit po hicie,a ich rejestr jest imponujący,wystarczy wymienić chociażby Dionne Warwick "Walk on By," Jackie DeShannona "What the World Needs Now Is Love," Tom Jonesa "What's New Pussycat?," Cilli Black "Alfie," Dusty Springfield "The Look of Love" i Herba Alperta "This Guy's in Love with You".
Każdy,poczynając od Beatlesów do Arethy Franklin wykonywał ich piosenki.Duet miał też sukcesy w filmie,tworząc niezapomniane tematy filmowe-Casino Royale, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance i Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.Piosenka przewodnia z tego ostatniego obrazu,"Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" w wykonaniu B.J.Thomasa, otrzymała Oscara.
W 1968r razem z dramaturgiem Neilem Simonem pracują nad musicalem Promises,Promises ,którego inspiracją był film "Garsoniera" Billy Wildera.Musical odniósł wielki sukces na Broadway'u uzyskując Tony Award [wyróżnienie przyznawane najlepszym musicalom-odpowiednik filmowego Oscara].Rok 1970 zaczęli obiecująco od przebojów Carpenters ("Close to You") i Fifth Dimension ("One Less Bell to Answer"),ale w ciągu dwóch lat ich współpraca zakończyła się.
Punktem zwrotnym było totalne niepowodzenie filmu muzycznego "Lost horizon",co zapoczątkowało długotrwały okres napięć między dwoma twórcami.Poważniejszą jednak przyczyną tego konfliktu i zerwania współpracy był fakt zaskarżenia teamu do sądu przez Dionne Warwick,za niedostarczenie jej nowego materiału do nagrań.To była katastrofa dla wszystkich zainteresowanych,na którą ani David ani Bacharach nie mogli znależć skutecznej recepty,mimo ,że David miał duży hit w wykonaniu duetu Julio Iglesias-Willie Nelson w 1984 roku- "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" ,napisany do spółki z kompozytorem Albertem Hammondem.W latach 1980-1986 Hal David pełnił funkcję prezydenta ASCAP [amerykańskiego stowarzyszenia autorów i kompozytorów],póżniej trafił do Hall Of Fame [przedsionka sławy] w kategorii autorów piosenek,by w 1991 otrzymać honorowy doktorat z zakresu muzyki na Lincoln College.
