Whispers

 The Whispers to amerykańska grupa wokalna z Los Angeles w Kalifornii.
Od końca lat 60-tych XX wieku zespół tworzy przeboje, a najbardziej znany jest z dwóch singli R&B, „And the Beat Goes On” z 1979 roku i „Rock Steady” z 1987 roku, które zajęły pierwsze miejsce na listach przebojów. Zespół ma na swoim koncie 15 singli R&B w pierwszej dziesiątce oraz 8 albumów R&B w pierwszej dziesiątce, z czego dwa, „The Whispers” i „Love Is Where You Find It”, dotarły do ​​pierwszego miejsca na listach przebojów. Zespół zdobył dwie platynowe i pięć złotych płyt według RIAA. 

 Zespół The Whispers powstał w 1963 roku w Watts w Kalifornii. W jego pierwotnym składzie znaleźli się bracia bliźniacy Wallace „Scotty” i Walter Scott, a także Gordy Harmon, Marcus Hutson i Nicholas Caldwell. Po zaproszeniu do obszaru Zatoki San Francisco w 1966 roku przez Sly'a Stone'a, grupa przeniosła się w tamte rejony, gdzie zaczęła budować reputację jako olśniewający zespół koncertowy. Walter Scott został powołany do służby w wojnie w Wietnamie w tym okresie na osiemnaście miesięcy, powracając do zespołu w 1969 roku po zwolnieniu ze służby. Po tym, jak Harmon uszkodził krtań w wypadku samochodowym w 1973 roku, zastąpił go były członek Friends of Distinction,Leaveil Degree. 

 Po serii singli w wytwórni Dore w Los Angeles, grupa podpisała kontrakt z małą wytwórnią Soul Clock w Los Angeles, prowadzoną przez producenta Rona Carsona, który był odpowiedzialny za ich przełomowy hit „Seems Like I Got to Do Wrong” w 1970 roku. Przenosząc się do większej nowojorskiej wytwórni Janus, Carson kontynuował produkcję, zanim sprzedał wszystkie swoje nagrania Janus, a grupa nagrywała wówczas głównie w Filadelfii w połowie lat 70-tych. W 1978 roku grupa podpisała kontrakt z wytwórnią Dicka Griffeya SOLAR Records.  

W latach 1979-80 utwory „And the Beat Goes On” / „Can You Do the Boogie” / „Out the Box” zajęły 1. miejsce na liście przebojów Hot Dance Club Play. W Wielkiej Brytanii „And the Beat Goes On” osiągnął 2. miejsce, a „It's a Love Thing” stał się ich drugim utworem w pierwszej dziesiątce w 1981 roku, osiągając 9. miejsce. W 1987 roku ich piosenka „Rock Steady” osiągnęła 7. miejsce na liście Billboard Hot 100 w USA, 10. miejsce na liście Cash Box Top 100 w USA i 1. miejsce na liście R&B. The Whispers założyli później własną firmę producencką Satin Tie Productions, dzięki której wydali w 2006 roku swój niezależny album For Your Ears Only. 

 Grupa otworzyła drugi mecz World Series w 1989 roku w Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum swoją interpretacją hymnu narodowego. Marcus Hutson opuścił zespół w 1992 roku z powodu raka prostaty. Według strony internetowej Whispers, kiedy Hutson zmarł 23 maja 2000 roku, przyrzekli, że nigdy go nie zastąpią i zaczęli występować jako kwartet. Jerry McNeil zrezygnował ze stanowiska klawiszowca pod koniec 1993 roku, aby spędzać więcej czasu z rodziną. W 2014 roku Whispers zostali wprowadzeni do Narodowej Galerii Sław Rhythm and Bluesa.
