W 1960 r. nagrała wraz z ojcem utwór "Cause I Love You", który został wydany na singlu przez wytwórnię Satellite (później Stax). W 1961 r. zadebiutowała jako wokalistka solowa singlem "Gee Whiz (Look At His Eyes)", który opublikowany w 1961r przez Atlantic dotarł do amerykańskiej Top 10.
Później ukazały się kolejno: "I'll Bring It On Home To You" (z 1962
r.) - odpowiedź na piosenkę Sama Cooke'a - "What A Fool i've Been" (z 1963 r.) i "Let Me Good To You" (z 1965 r.). Kompozycja Isaaca Hayesa i Davida Portera "B-A-B-Y" w jej wykonaniu dotarła do Top 3 amerykańskiej listy rhythm'n' bluesowej.
Seria duetów, zarejestrowanych później z Otisem Reddingiem, zapewniła jej tytuł "królowej muzyki soul", a pierwszym wspólnie nagranym utworem była znakomita wersja kompozycji "Tramp" Lowella Fulsona. Przed przedwczesną śmiercią Reddinga duet opublikował jeszcze piosenki "Knock On Wood" i "Lovey Dovey". Sukces Arethy Franklin odsunął niebawem karierę Carli Thomas na plan dalszy.

nie odniosły spodziewanego sukcesu, lecz artystka była związana z
wytwórnią Stax aż do jej bankructwa w 1975 r. Od tej pory Carla Thomas
nie nagrała żadnej płyty, ale od czasu do czasu bierze udział w trasach
koncertowych artystów związanych w przeszłości z tą firmą.
