Początkowo grali w lokalnych bandach,a w 1920r sformowali własny Dorsey's Novelty Six.Dwa lata póżniej otrzymują angaż w Baltimore i debiutują w radio jako Dorsey's Wild Canaries.Do połowy lat 20-tych grają w rozmaitych zespołach ; Scranton Sirens, California Ramblers, i orkiestrze Jeana Goldkette i Paula Whitemana. W końcu osiedli w Nowym Jorku i pracowali jako muzycy sesyjni.
W 1927r zaczynają nagrywać dla Okeh Records z własną Dorsey Brothers Orchestra promując swój pierwszy hit "Coquette" z lipca 1928r.Latem nastepnego roku na Top10 trafia utwór "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)" z Bingiem Crosby
jako wokalistą.Animozje między braćmi doprowadziły do odejścia
Tommy'ego i sformowania własnego bandu w 1935r z resztek po orkiestrze Joe Haymesa.
Znakiem rozpoznawczym orkiestry było jej delikatne, wygładzone brzmienie
z lirycznym puzonem w tle.Wylansowali swój pierwszy hit-"On Treasure Island" równolegle z podpisaniem kontraktu z RCA Victor.To jeden z 137 przebojów orkiestry obok minn."Marie",
"The Big Apple", "Music, Maestro, Please", "I'll Never Smile Again",
"This Love of Mine", "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "T.D.'s Boogie
Woogie", "Well, Git 'It", "Opus One", "Manhattan Serenade", i "There Are Such Things".Orkiestra Tommy Dorsey'a sprzedała najwięcej płyt w historii RCA Victor,do czasu wejścia na estradę Elvisa Presleya.
W orkiestrze grali w tym czasie jedni z najlepszych instrumentalistów,trębacze ; Bunny Berigan, Ziggy Elman, i Charlie Shavers,trębacz, aranżer i kompozytor-Sy Oliver, perkusista Buddy Rich i wokaliści- Jo Stafford, Dick Haymes i Frank Sinatra.
Orkiestra Tommy Dorsey'a obok bandu Glena Millera i brata Jimmy'ego
stanowiła trójkę najwybitniejszych wykonawców ery swingu.Jednym z
członków orkiestry podpatrujących uważnie pracę Sy Olivera był puzonista
Nelson Riddle,póżniejszy aranżer i szef orkiestry towarzyszącej
Frankowi Sinatrze.Wraz z przystąpieniem Stanów Zjednoczonych do II wojny
światowej pojawiły się trudności personalne i związane z podróżowaniem
orkiestry. We wrześniu odchodzi Frank Sinatra aby kontynuowac karierę
solową,a pod koniec roku Pied Pipers.Mimo wszystko orkiestra występuje w
filmie Ship Ahoy, lansując jako hit tytułową
piosenkę.Mimo ograniczenia pracy studiów nagraniowych odnoszą sukcesy na
listach przebojów piosenkami "There Are Such Things" i "In the Blue of the Evening".W międzyczasie Dorsey wykazuje dużą aktywność na niwie filmowej wystepując w 1943r w Presenting Lily Mars, DuBarry Was a Lady, i Girl Crazy.
Po kilkuletniej serii udanych nagrań przechodzi do wytwórni Decca kontynując serię udanych singli.W maju 1953r Tommy Dorsey rozwiązuje band i reaktywuje z bratem wspólny projekt Dorsey Brothers Orchestra wzbudzając wielki aplauz publiczności.
