Zadebiutował w miejscowej grupie Magdalene, w której zastąpił Davida Coverdale'a po jego odejściu do Deep Purple. Pod nazwą Beautiful Losers (nawiązującej nazwą do sławnej powieści Leonarda Cohena ). Zespół wygrał w 1975 festiwal młodych talentów, ale nie wpłynęło to na jego amatorską kondycję.
Rea podjął działalność solową w kierowanej przez Gusa Dudgeona wytwórni Magnet. Tytuł jednej z piosenek,"Fool (If You Think lt's Over)" rokował dobrze wykonawcy i jego pseudonimowi. Zyskał popularność w wykonaniu autora i w wersji Elkie Brooks.
Brytyjski sukces zaowocował w Niemczech, gdzie w l. 80-tych. Rea zdobył
szeroką popularność dzięki bluesowej wokalizie i rockowemu brzmieniu
gitary. Przeboje z longplaya Deltics, zwłaszcza tytułowy, podbiły kontynent, w czym znaczny udział miał profesjonalny keyboardzista Max Middieton.
Największą popularność zdobyło "I Can't Hear Your Music" z albumu Water Sign. W Wielkiej Brytanii sukces odniosła płyta Shamrock Diaries i pochodzący z niej singlowy temat "Stainsby Girls" nawiązujący do wspomnień z dzieciństwa. Album Dancing With Strangers z 1987 trafił na drugie miejsce brytyjskiej listy, ale pochodzący z niego temat "Joys Of Christmas" nie znalazł wielu nabywców.
W 1988r wytwórnia Magnet została wykupiona przez WEA, co spowodowało popyt na płyty Chrisa w Europie. Rea stał się modny, chociaż nieco wbrew własnej woli. Nagrany w 1990 album The Road To Hell promował tytułowy temat opisujący spotkanie wykonawcy z duchem zmarłej matki przestrzegającej przed zdradą rodzinnych korzeni. Podobnie jak poprzedni longplay Auberge, płyta stała się bestsellerem dzięki umiejętności wokalisty, być może dzięki słuchaniu rad udzielonych przez ducha matki.
Chris Rea od 1994 zmagał się z różnorodnymi problemami ze zdrowiem, co rozpoczęło się od wrzodów żołądka rok później natomiast chorował na zapalenie otrzewnej. W 2000 roku zdiagnozowano u niego raka trzustki. Niezbędna była operacja, podczas której wycięto mu trzustkę, dwunastnicę i pęcherzyk żółciowy. W 2016 roku artysta przeszedł udar, a pod koniec 2017 roku zemdlał na scenie podczas koncertu w New Theatre w Oxfordzie. Po tym reszta koncertów na jego trasie została odwołana.
Chris Rea jest utytułowanym kierowcą wyścigowym, startował w Porsche Cup, 24H Le Mans i wyścigach samochodów turystycznych. Zna wielu kierowców F1. Przyjaźnił się m.in. z Ayrtonem Senną. Po jego śmierci napisał piosenkę ku jego czci pt. „Saudade”.
