Pierwszy album w reżyserii Billa Schnee wydała wytwórnia Chrysalis wraz z singlem „Do You Believe In Love" oraz ironicznym wideoklipem. Równie niefrasobliwa, łącząca rock i soul muzyka grupy osiągnęła kulminację na longplayu Sports (miejsce w pierwszej dwudziestce amerykańskich przebojów). Do najpopularniejszych singli należały kompozycja Chinna i Chapmana „Heart & Soul”, „The Heart Of Rock & Roll", „If This Is It” i „I Want ANew Drug”. O wykorzystany w filmie „Ghostburners” plagiat ostatniego z nich Lewis oskarżył Raya Parkera Juniora.
W latach 1985-86 trzy single grupy trafiły na szczyt listy amerykańskiej: „The Power Of Love” - wykorzystany jako motyw przewodni w filmie „Back To The Future” („Powrót do przyszłości") Roberta Zemeckisa, kompozycja Hayesa i Lewisa „Stuck With You” oraz „Jacob’s Ladder” autorstwa Bruce’a Hornsby’ego. Powodzeniem cieszył się też „Perfect World” z 1988r, chociaż albumowi Hard At Play wiodło się gorzej. Status Lewisa wśród wykonawców „muzyki środka” został ugruntowany wykonaniem amerykańskiego hymnu podczas finału rozgrywek piłkarskich American Bowl.
Wprawdzie lata 90-te przyniosły Lewisowi spadek popularności, powrócił z powodzeniem w 1993r subtelną, wykonywaną a cappella wersją „It‘s All Right” Curtisa Mayfielda. Kontynuacją był album koncertowy Four Chords And Several Years Ago, na którym artyście towarzyszyli jego dawni mentorzy.
