Wytwórnia Duke została założona w 1952r w Memphis przez Davida J. Mattisa i Billa Fitzgeralda.Nabył ją Don Robey właściciel od 1949r Peacock Records,i połączył obie firmy w sierpniu tego samego roku.Najbardziej znani wykonawcy nagrywający tutaj,to Johnny Ace i Roscoe Gordon.W kwietniu 1953r Robey wykupił kontrolny pakiet wytwórni i przeniósł jej siedzibę do swojego Bronze Peacock Night Club w Houston .Irving Marcus i Dave Clark zajmowali się sprzedażą i promocją,a zespół producencki stanowili Johnny Otis, Bill Harvey, Don Robey i Joe Scott.
 
Na sprzedawanych płytach ukazywał się nadruk Duke/Peacock.Don Robey sprzedał Duke/Peacock i założone przez siebie oddziały Backbeat i Songbird wytwórni ABC-Dunhill 23 maja 1973r,zostając jednocześnie konsultantem w ABC organizując katalog wytwórni.
 
ABC została ostatecznie sprzedana w 1979r wytwórni MCA,a w 1995r Universal Music Group stało się właśścicielem tej ostatniej.
