Otis Redding

Ur. 9.09.1941 r. w Dawson w stanie Georgia, USA, zm. 10. 12. 1967 r. Jako syn pastora baptystów, Redding wzrastał w fascynacji muzyką gospel, później zainteresował go także jump blues i rhythm'n'blues.

Po przeprowadzce do Macon duże wrażenie zrobił na nim miejscowy idol młodzieży Little Richard. Postanowił zostać profesjonalnym wokalistą. Szkolny kolega Reddinga Phil Walden został jego agentem i menedżerem. Korzystając z kontaktów Waldena, Otis Redding dołączył do zespołu Johnny Jenkins And Pinetoppers w charakterze okazjonalnego wokalisty i kierowcy. Zaczął także nagrywać dla kilku niezależnych lokalnych wytwórni. Dwa pierwsze single firmowane przez zespół Otis And The Shooters, "She's Alright" i " Shout Bamalama" utrzymane były w stylu Little Richarda.

Akcje Reddinga wzrosły, kiedy jego kompozycja "These Arms Of Mine" została zauważona przez wytwórnię Volt (filię Stax). Zarejestrowana pod koniec sesji nagraniowej Johnny'ego Jenkinsa trafiła do amerykańskiej "Gorącej Setki" w maju 1963 r.

Kolejne nagrania "Pain In My Heart", "That's How Strong My Love Is", I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Mr. Pitiful", Respect" i "Fa Fa Pa Pa Fa Pa (Sad Song)" również stały się dużymi przebojami. Do 1965 r. Otis Redding pozostawał kimś w rodzaju postaci kultowej, a na słynnym albumie Otis Blue obok kompozycji autorskich znalazły się "Satisfaction" Rolling Stonesów i dwa utwory z repertuaru Sama Cooke'a. Wielkim przebojem w Wielkiej Brytanii była także wersja Reddinga piosenki Temptations "My Girl". Popularność artysty wciąż rosła, m.in. po występach rewii "Hit The Road Stax" w 1967 r. Spory sukces odniósł także piosenką "Tramp" nagraną w duecie z Carlą Thomas. Jego firma nagraniowa - Jotis- była odpowiedzialna za wylansowanie Arthura Conleya. Triumfalny występ na festiwalu piosenki w Monterey potwierdził, że Redding był w stanie przyciągnąć jeszcze większe rzesze fanów.

Niestety pasmo sukcesów przerwała tragiczna śmierć artysty. 10 grudnia 1967 r. mały samolot, którym zwykle podróżował, uległ awarii i wpadł do jeziora Monona w Madison w stanie Wisconsin. W katastrofie zginęli także pracownik ochrony, pilot i czterech członków zespołu Bar - Kays. Pełna melancholii piosenka "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", nagrana zaledwie trzy dni wcześniej, jako jedyna w karierze Reddinga została sprzedana na singlu w ilości miliona egzemplarzy i została numerem 1 amerykańskiej listy bestsellerów.

Nagrania opublikowane po śmierci artysty ukazują nie spełnioną do końca dojrzałość twórczą, choć dziś wielu krytyków zwraca uwagę na ograniczone możliwości wokalne Otisa Reddinga. Mimo to ekspresja, witalność i sposób oddziaływania na emocje świadczą o jego olbrzymim talencie. Piosenki, które napisał, często wspólnie z gitarzystą Stevem Cropperem, zaliczyć można do nalepszych dokonań gatunku soul. Redding słusznie bywa nazywany tytanem muzyki soul.
