Urodzony w Harold Wayne King w Savanna, Illinois , King był imponującym sportowcem w liceum i krótko grał w profesjonalną piłkę nożną w kantonie Buldog . Uczęszczał również na uniwersytet Valparaiso w Indianie przez dwa lata, ale odszedł, aby rozpocząć karierę muzyczną.
Po graniu na saksofonie w orkiestrze Paula Whitemana stworzył „Wayne King and Orchestra” w 1927 roku. Inowacje Kinga polegały na przekształceniu utworu Carrie Jacobs-Bond „I Love You Truly” z oryginalnego taktu 2/4 na 3/4.

King zmarł w lipcu 1985 roku, a jego ciało zostało skremowane . Jego żona, aktorka filmu niemego , Dorothy Jones King (pseudonim Janis) trzymała ją przy sobie przez resztę życia po 53 latach małżeństwa.
