Trzon The Pogues stanowili rówieśnicy muzyków tworzących The SEX PISTOLS, The CLASH czy The JAM (Chevron był wcześniej gitarzystą punkrockowej grupy Radiators From Space). Do zespołu dołączyli też jednak instrumentaliści starsi, bardziej doświadczeni (Woods w końcu lat sześćdziesiątych występował w STEELEYE SPAN).
MacGowan, kompozytor i autor większości piosenek The Pogues, umiejętnie nawiązał w swej twórczości do folkloru irlandzkiego - butnych i dosadnych ballad (A Pair Of Brown Eyes) i tańców (Sally MacLennane, Billy's Bones, Bottle Of Smoke). W realistycznych tekstach podjął temat "niesprawiedliwości i ponurych stron życia".
Powiodła się zespołowi próba ożywienia piosenek ludowych z różnych stron świata (I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day, Jesse James, And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, Thousands Are Sailing). Na If i should fall from grace with god zaproponował też m.in. utrzymany w klimacie orientalnym utwór Turkish Song Of The Damned oraz nawiązującą do folkloru meksykańskiego kompozycję Fiesta. Największą popularność zyskały w wykonaniu The Pogues piosenki: The Dark Streets Of London, Dirty Old Town, The Irish Rover (firmowana razem z grupą The Dubliners) i Fairytale Of New York (z wokalistką Kirsty MacColl).
Kilkoma nagraniami zespół zilustrował dwa filmy Alexa Coxa - Sid And Nancy (1986) o życiu i śmierci Sida Viciousa, basisty The Sex Pistols, oraz western Straight To Hell (1987), w którym także wystąpił. Na zamówienie trupy teatralnej Chenie Street Drill Hall Arts Centre skomponował muzykę do sztuki Raya Brennana - Sidewind (1989).
