Nagrany dla wytwórni Fame i rozprowadzany przez Atlantic singel „Hold On To What You’ve Got” wszedł do amerykańskiej Top 5. W podobnym stylu utrzymane były dwa kolejne: „A Woman Can Change A Man” i „The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)”. Jednak Joe śpiewał również rytmiczne, pełne życia piosenki w stylu „S.Y.S.L.J.F.M. (The Letter Song)” (z 1966 r.) i „Show Me” (z 1967 r.).
Późniejsze wydawnictwa osiągnęły mniejszy sukces i mimo że kompozycje „Skinny Legs And All” i „Men Are Gettin’ Scarce” potwierdzały jego duże możliwości, wokalista sprawiał wrażenie, jakby nie potrafił zdecydować się, w jakim kierunku podążać. Ten etap w karierze artysty zamknął dynamiczny singel „I Gotcha” (z 1972 r.). Tex postanowił wycofać się z aktywnego życia muzycznego.
Po przejściu na islam w 1966 r. zmienił nazwisko na Yusuf Hazziez i podróżował z wykładami o tematyce religijnej. Do muzyki powrócił w 1975 r., a dwa lata później przeżył udany powrót po sukcesie piosenki „Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)”. W latach 80-tych artysta znów przestał nagrywać i poświęcił się trzem pasjom: islamowi, swojemu rancho w Teksasie i drużynie futbolowej Houston Oilers. W 1982 r. zmarł na atak serca.
