Johnny Mathis

 Jeden z najpopularniejszych tradycyjnych wokalistów, który pojawił się przed zdominowanymi przez rock latami 60. XX wieku, Johnny Mathis skoncentrował się na romantycznych interpretacjach standardów jazzowych i popowych dla współczesnej dorosłej publiczności. Chociaż Mathis zadebiutował mnóstwem  singli na listach przebojów, w tym utworem „Chances Are” (1957), który znalazł się na czołowych miejscach 100 najpopularniejszych płyt, później osiągnął sukces na rynku albumów, gdzie kilkanaście jego płyt LP osiągnęło status złotej lub platynowej płyty, a ponad 60 osiągnęło status złotej lub platynowej płyty. miejsce na liście Billboard 200.
 

Początkowo skupiał się na tematycznych albumach zawierających utwory z programów muzycznych i tradycyjne ulubione utwory, ale począwszy od lat 70-tych Mathis zaczął włączać do swoich nagrań bardziej zróżnicowane style muzyczne, w tym soft rock, R&B i country. Jest także ukochanym interpretatorem muzyki świątecznej. Jego ponad pół tuzina albumów bożonarodzeniowych i prawie tyle samo singli sezonowych znalazło się na listach przebojów, w tym jego stale notowana na listach przebojów wersja „It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” (1986). Ten stylistyczny eklektyzm w połączeniu z miodowym tonem głosu pomógł Johnny'emu Mathisowi pozostać popularną atrakcją koncertową aż do XXI wieku.  

W 2023 roku wydał swój siódmy świąteczny album Christmas Time Is Here. Nic dziwnego, biorąc pod uwagę jego nacisk na długie, długotrwałe nuty i ciężkie wibrato, Mathis jeszcze jako nastolatek uczył się pod okiem trenera opery i niemal dał się zwabić do tego zawodu; jego innymi inspiracjami byli łagodniejsi wokaliści jazzowi z lat czterdziestych XX wieku - Nat „King” Cole, Billy Eckstine i Lena Horne. Mathis był wyjątkowym sportowcem w szkole średniej w San Francisco, ale szansa na śpiewanie odciągnęła go od stypendium w college'u i potencjalnego miejsca w kadrze olimpijskiej. Kontrakt menadżerski podpisał z właścicielką klubu Helen Noga, która przedstawiła piosenkarza George’owi Avakianowi, producentowi jazzowemu Columbia Records. Avakian podpisał z nim kontrakt i wykorzystał orkiestry pod dyrekcją Teo Macero, Gila Evansa i Johna Lewisa do nagrania debiutanckiego albumu Mathisa w 1957 roku.

Dyrektor wykonawczy Columbia A&R, Mitch Miller - znany ze swoich desperacko popowych albumów i programów telewizyjnych Sing Along - zdecydował, że jedynym ratunkiem jest przejście Mathisa na popową balladę w stylu Millera i przepis zadziałał cudownie; płyta LP Wonderful Wonderful nie zawierała, ale została nazwana na cześć hitu z pierwszej dwudziestki w 1957 roku, po którym pojawił się hit numer pięć „It's Not for Me to Say” i jego pierwszy numer jeden „Chances Are”. Od tego momentu Johnny Mathis skupił się wyłącznie na   balladach dla dorosłych współczesnych słuchaczy.  

Choć Johnny Mathis regularnie pojawiał się na listach przebojów, w późnych latach 50. i 60-tych. Johnny Mathis nie wydawał wielkich hitów- połowa jego dorobku w pierwszej dziesiątce jego kariery miała miejsce tylko w 1957 r. - więc zamiast tego zdecydował się skupić na rozwijającym się rynku albumów, w dużej mierze jak Frank Sinatra, jego główny rywal pod koniec lat 50-tych w roli najpopularniejszego tradycyjnego wokalisty męskiego. Mathis odszedł od melodii z występów i tradycyjnego popu na rzecz miękkiego rocka w latach 70-tych, a w 1978 roku wydał swój drugi singiel numer jeden „Too Much, Too Little, Too Late”. Singiel nagrano w duecie z Deniece Williams co skłoniło Mathisa do rozpoczęcia prób duetów z różnymi partnerkami (w tym Dionne Warwick, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight i Nana Mouskouri), chociaż żaden z singli nie odniósł takiego sukcesu jak oryginał. 

 Mathis nadal wydawał i sprzedawał albumy przez całe lata 90-te  - piątą dekadę nagrywania dla Columbii - i później, między innymi „Bo You Loved Me: Songs of Diane Warren” z 1998 r. i „Mathis on Broadway” z 2000 r. Po wydaniu albumu na Broadwayu Mathis wydał „The Christmas Album” z 2002 r. i „Isn't it Romantic: The Standards Album” z 2005 r., z których oba potwierdziły, że kultowy wokalista jest w doskonałej formie.  

W 2008 roku Mathis wydał wyprodukowany i zaaranżowany przez Waltera Afanasieffa A Night to Remember, swój pierwszy od ponad dziesięciu lat prosty, współczesny album dla dorosłych. Let It Be Me: Mathis in Nashville, pierwszy pełnometrażowy album Mathisa z muzyką country, ukazał się we wrześniu 2010 roku. Album ostatecznie zdobył nominację do nagrody Grammy w kategorii Najlepszy tradycyjny popowy album wokalny. Mathis wydał swój szósty świąteczny album Sending You a Little Christmas w 2013 r., a w 2017 r. wydał Johnny Mathis Sings the Great New American Songbook, na którym wykonał współczesne hity takich artystów jak Adele, Josh Groban, R. Kelly, i innych.  

Trzy miesiące po wrześniowym wydaniu Sings the Great New American Songbook, Legacy wydało obszerną kolekcję The Voice of Romance: The Columbia Original Album Collection, pudełko zawierające 68 płyt CD, zawierające wszystkie albumy, które wydał dla tej wytwórni w latach 1956-2017. Romance zawierał także I Love My Lady , album Mathis wyprodukowany przez Nile'a Rodgersa i Bernarda Edwardsa w 1981 roku, ale nigdy nie wydany.  

W 2023 roku Mathis zaprezentował swój siódmy zestaw nowo nagranych piosenek bożonarodzeniowych Christmas Time Is Here, na którym znalazł się duet z Kristin Chenoweth. To był ostatni album, który został nagrany w legendarnym hollywoodzkim studiu nagrań Capitol, zanim zostało ono zamknięte z powodu gruntownego remontu.
