Muzykowanie pomogło mu przezwyciężyć stress w tym trudnym
okresie.
wykonywaniem.Wkrótce podpisuje kontrakt z producentem Billem Lowery i nagrał swoją pierwszą swoją płytę "If the Good Lord's Willing and the Creeks Don't Rise"
sesyjny.
W 1962r odnosi spory sukces singlami "Goodnight Irene" i "Hully Gully Guitar",otwierające mu drogę do słynnego producenta-Cheta Atkinsa,który wyprodukował jego hit "If I Don't Live Up to It" w 1965r.
Dwa lata póżniej jego pierwsza kompozycja "Guitar man" trafia na listy przebojów w wykonaniu Elvisa Presley'a.Presley nagrywa też inną kompozycję Reeda,"U.S. Male".Po wydaniu w 1970r dużego przeboju "Amos Moses",będącego hybrydą rocka, country i cajun, tworzy z Atkinsem spółkę ,która nagrywa album Me and Jerry.Występuje też regularnie w telewizyjnym show Glenna Campbella Goodtime Hour.Jego kolejny singiel "When You're Hot, You're Hot",trafia do Top10 listy Billboard, dając jednocześnie tytuł nowemu albumowi.Nagrywa z Atkinsem drugi wspólny LP Me and Chet, umieszczajac serie kilku przebojów na listach bestsellerów.
Atkins często namawiał Reeda do nagrania
Razem ze swoim przyjacielem Burtem Reynoldsem występuje w nakręconym w 1974r filmie W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings.Pózniej występuje z nim w kolejnych obrazach Gator,High Ballin' i nakręconym w 1979r Hot Stuff.Występuje też we wszystkich trzech częściach Smokey and the Bandit.
W 1979r wydaje album składający się w połowie z instrumentalnych w połowie wokalnych utworów nazywający się adekwatnie Half & Half.Wraca na listy przebojów w 1982r singlami "She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)" i "Bird" [#2 Country Chart].Jego ostatni przebój "I'm a Slave" pochodzi z 1983r.Po nieudanym longplay'u Lookin' at You,Reed skupia się do 1992r na występach na żywo,aż do momentu reaktywowania współpracy z Atkinsem w postaci płyty Sneakin' Around.
Jeszcze w 1998r zagrał w filmie Adama Sandlera The Waterboy.Jego ostatnia płyta nagrana w 2006r nosi tytuł "Let's Git It On".
