Zespół zdobył kontrakt płytowy w wytwórni Capitol Records. Po sukcesie piosenki Different Drum w 1968r, wokalistka zdecydowała się na karierę solową. Jej repertuar wypełniły piosenki w stylu country, a w zespole towarzyszącym znaleźli się muzycy, którzy wkrótce stworzyli grupę The Eagles.
W 1975r, wspólnie z producentem Peterem Asherem, Ronstadt nagrała album Heart Like a Wheel, ukazujący jej dojrzałość i repertuar złożony ze współczesnych piosenek oraz nowych wersji utworów tradycyjnych. Album trafił na szczyt listy bestsellerów płytowych i osiągnął nakład 2 mln egz. Z płyty pochodziły przeboje You’re Ho Good, When Will I Be Loved oraz nagrodzony Grammy I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You.
W następnych latach wydala blisko 20 albumów, które osiągnęły złote (500 tys. egz.) i platynowe (1 mln egz.) nakłady. W repertuarze Ronstadt pojawiły się utwory rhythm- and-bluesowe, w rytmach reggae a nawet rockandrollowe. Popularność zyskały jej wersje piosenek Roya Orbisona Blue Bayou i Elvisa Presley'a Love Me Tender.
Nowym wyzwaniem dla artystki była rola (w 1980r) w operetce The Pirates of Penzance, najpierw na deskach Delacorte Theater w Nowym Jorku i potem w wersji filmowej. Mniej udane okazały się występy Ronstadt w operze La Boheme. Efektem koncertów z orkiestrą Nelsona Riddle’a było nagranie trzech bestsellerowych albumów z popularnymi standardami. W 1986r powstał album Trio, na którym w nieskazitelnej harmonii zabrzmiały głosy Ronstadt., Dolly Parton i Emmylou Harris. W drugiej połowie lat 80-tych artystka przygotowała albumy z tradycyjnymi meksykańskimi piosenkami oraz duety z Jamesem Ingramem (Somewhere Out There) i Aaronem Neville (Don’t Know Much, All My Life).
Mając osiem nagród Grammy, wyjątkowo bogaty i zróżnicowany repertuar, wokalistka nagrała
w 1996r album z kołysankami w stylu zatytułowany Dedicated to the One.
