Duke Ellington

Jeden z najważniejszych kompozytorów w historii jazzu. Napisał około 2000 znanych utworów.
Edward Ellington (przydomek Duke) rozpoczął naukę gry na fortepianie w wieku 7 lat. Mając 15 lat napisał swą pierwszą kompozycję - "Soda Fountain Rag". W latach 1915 -1918 pobierał lekcje u Olivera Perry'ego i Henry'ego Granta. W 1922 r. grał w zespole Wilbura Sweatmana.
W następnym roku założył zespół "The Washingtonians" (m.in. Sonny Greer, Otton Hardwick, Arthur Whetsol, Elmer Snowden). W 1924 r. nagrał pierwsze płyty z kolejnym własnym zespołem zwanym "The Deacons".

Początkiem kariery bigbandu "Duke Ellington and His Orchestra" były występy w "Cotton Club" w Harlemie i nagrania dla wytwórni Victor w roku 1927. W 1930 r. zespół towarzyszył Maurice'owi Chevalierowi. Od 1931 r. dołączyła do orkiestry Elligtona wokalistka Ivie Anderson, która śpiewała z zespołem do 1942 r.

W 1944 r. Duke zajął pierwsze miejsce w ankiecie "Esquire" w kategoriach aranżer i lider bigbandu. Jego orkiestra liczyła wówczas 18 muzyków. W latach 50-tych u Ellingtona zaczynało lub rozwijało kariery wielu słynnych muzyków: m.in. Oscar Pettiford, Paul Gonsalves, Johny Hodges, Clark Terry, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson.

W szpitalu pracował nad swoimi ostatnimi kompozycjami.

Skomponował wiele utworów, które stały się standardami: m.in. "Black and Tan Fantasy"; "Mood Indigo"; "It Don't Mean a Thing"; "Sophisticated Lady"; "Solitude"; "Satin Doll"; "In a Sentimental Mood"; "Concerto for Cootie"; "Ko-Ko". Najsłynniejsza jest jednak aranżacja Ellingtona kompozycji Juana Tizola "Caravan".
