If You Need Me" i "It's Too Late". Współpraca z gitarzystą Stevem Cropperem (patrz Booker T And The MGS, The Mar-Keys ) zaowocowała klasycznym dziś soulowym standardem "In The Midnight Hour" z 1965 r. oraz serią przebojów: "Don't Fight It" (z 1965 r.), "634-5789 (Souisville, USA)", "Land Of A 1000 Dances", "Mustang Sally" (oba z 1966 r.) oraz "Funky Broadway" z 1967 r.
Późniejsze eksperymenty pod kierunkiem producenckiego tandemu Gamble i Huff zaowocowały przebojami "Engine Number 9" (z 1970 r.- oryginalnie temat country znany z wersji Rogera Millera) i "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" (z 1971 r.).
Wyprawa do Miami przyniosła " Don't Knock My Love", ostatni nagrany dla Atlantic przebój z pierwszej amerykańskiej dwudziestki. W 1972 r.
W latach osiemdziesiątych występował wraz z Joe Texem, Donem Covayem, Benem E.Kingiem i Solomonem Burkiem w formacji Soul Clan, złożonej z dawnych gwiazd gatunku. W 1991 r. wystąpił w roli charakterystycznej w głośnym, poświęconym muzyce soulowej filmie "The Commitments".
