Popularność zdobył jako kompozytor przebojów The Kalin Twins ("Loneliness"), Roya Orbisona ("Today's Teardrops") i Bobby'ego Vee ("Rubber Ball").
Solową karierę piosenkarza zapoczątkował nagrany w 1961 r. techniką wielościeżkową singel "I Wanna Love My Life Away" oraz patetyczne westernowe ballady "Town Without Pity" i "Man Who Shot Liberty Valence", ostatecznie odrzucone przez producentów obu filmów, za to popularne w wersjach płytowych. Wczesnym nagraniom towarzyszyły nadal kompozycje pisane dla innych wykonawców, z których "Hello Mary Lou" i "He's A Rebel" stały się przebojami odpowiednio Ricky'ego Nelsona i grupy The Crystals.
W 1963 r. Pitney odbył tournee po Wielkiej Brytanii. Kompozycja Burta Bacharacha "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" weszła do brytyjskiej Top 10, a spotkanie z Mickiem Jaggerem i Keithem Richardsem zaowocowało nagraniem przez artystę kompozycji obu Stonesów, "This Girl Belongs To Yesterday".
Pomimo równoległej inwazji muzyki beatowej, melodramatyczne przeboje Pitneya (wykonywane charakterystycznym, przechodzącym w falset głosem ) odnosiły sukcesy w USA, a zwłaszcza w Wielkiej Brytanii. Do najpopularniejszych z nich należały: "I'm Gonna Be Strong" (z 1964 r.) autorstwa Barry'ego Manna i Cynthii Weills "I Must Be Seeing Things", "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love" i "Princess In Rags" (z 1965 r.), "Backstage", "Nobody Needs Your Love" Randy'ego Newmana i "Just One Smile" (z 1966 r.) oraz "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart" z 1967 r.
Mniejszym powodzeniem cieszył się nagrany w 1968 r. singel "Somewhere In The Country" z kontrowersyjnym tekstem o matce nieślubnego dziecka (swoistym uzupełnieniem "Twenty Four Hour From Tulsa", opisującym pozamałżeński wyskok podróżującego służbowo po Stanach ojca rodziny ).
W 1988 r. na szczyt brytyjskiej listy przebojów trafiła nieoczekiwanie nowa wersja "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart", wykonywana przez Pitneya w duecie z Markiem Almondem.
