Zaraz po powstaniu zyskali uznanie publiczności londyńskich klubów, zaś masową popularność - podobnie, jak wiele innych zespołów - zdobyli występem w telewizyjnym programie "Ready Steady Go". Na początku 1965 r. ich wersja tematu Bessie Banks "Go Now" wsparta fascynującym wstępem i partią solową fortepianu Pindera znalazła się na szczycie brytyjskiej listy przebojów. Singel trafił też do amerykańskiej Top 10, ale mimo muzycznych walorów kolejnych nagrań ("I Don't Want To Go On Without You", "From The Bottom Of My Heart", "Every Day") zespołowi nie udało się powtórzyć rynkowego sukcesu debiutu. Również pierwszy album The Magnificent Moodies nie sprostał oczekiwaniom wytwórni.
W 1966 r. Warwicka i Laine'a zastąpili Justin Hayward (właśc. David Justin Hayward, ur. 14.10.1946 r. w Swindon w hrabstwie Wiltshire) i John Lodge (ur. 20.07.1945 r. w Birmingham). Był to początek drugiego etapu kariery grupy zainaugurowanego klasycznym dziś tematem Haywarda "Nights In White Satin". Towarzyszący singlowi album Days Of Future Passed był niezwykle ambitnym instrumentalnie zamierzeniem.
Moody Blues założyli własną wytwórnię Threshold Records, a w 1973 r. reedycja "Nights In White Satin" trafiła ponownie do brytyjskiej Top 10. W 1974 r. zespół zawiesił działalność, by umożliwić każdemu z jego członków realizacje indywidualnych zamierzeń.
Hayward i Lodge zadebiutowali z powodzeniem we własnej grupie The Blue Jays, Thomas nagrał album From Mighty Oaks, Edge zaś longplay Kick Off Your Muddy Boots, na którym towarzyszył mu Adrian Gurvitz (eks-lider grupy Gun).
Muzycy połączyli się powtórnie na płycie Octave. Jej wielki sukces nie zapobiegł odejściu Pindera preferującego nie spełnione dotąd solowe zamierzenia. Czary goryczy dopełniło wycofanie się Clarka, tradycyjnego producenta nagrań grupy. Do zespołu w miejsce Pindera przyjęto wirtuoza instumentów klawiszowych Patricka Moraza, występującego poprzednio w Yes i Refugee. Równocześnie Hayward odniósł indywidualny sukces singlem "Forever Autumn", zaczerpniętym z epickiego albumu Jeffa Wayne'a The War Of The Worlds.
