kompozytor i producent,wielokrotny laureat nagrody Grammy.Był członkiem grupy Skylark ,która w 1972r wylansowała duży hit "Wildflower"
 
Współpracował z wieloma uznanymi artystami,jak chociażby:Clay Aiken, Josh Groban, Katharine McPhee, Céline Dion, Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers, The Corrs, George Harrison, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, Filippa Giordano, Laura Pausini, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Luis Miguel, Chicago, Fred Norris, Richard Marx, Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John, Andrea Bocelli, Deborah Blando, Myriam Hernandez, Lara Fabian, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias, Gordon Lightfoot, Madonna, All-4-One, Al Jarreau, Yes.Swoją producencką karierę zaczął kierując swoją grupą Attitudes.Niebawem pisał i produkował materiał dla Hall & Oates, Deniece Williams, Carole Bayer Sager, Boz Scaggs i Average White Band.W 1979r otrzymał swoje pierwsze Grammy za piosenkę "After the Love Has Gone" napisaną dla Earth,Wind & Fire.Od tego czasu nastąpiła prawdziwa eksplozja jego kariery,ukoronowana współpracą z Kenny Rogersem i Kenny Logginsem.
 
Skomponował utwory do filmu St. Elmo's Fire,które stały się hitami;tutułowy temat instrumentalny i piosenkę "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)",która w wykonaniu Johna Parra stała się #1 na amerykańskiej liście bestsellerów singlowych.
 
Foster był też producentem debiutanckich albumów The Corrs,Michaela Buble'a i Josha Grobana,które wydała jego własna firma nagraniowa 143 Records dystrybuowana przez Warner Music.Za swoje kompozycje został uhonorowany przez BMI tytułem "Kompozytora Roku".Jest czternastokrotnym zdobywca Grammy [w tym trzy razy jako producent],był trzy razy nominowany do Oscara za muzykę i zdobył "Złoty Glob" za piosenkę "The Prayer" z filmu Quest for Camelot.
 
W 1991r ożenił się z Lindą Thompson,z którą napisał wiele piosenek,minn."I Have Nothing" dla Whitney Houston z filmu "Bodyguard" nominowaną do Oscara.Razem z Kennethem "Babyface" Edmondsem skomponował oficjalny hymn Igrzysk Olimpijskich w 1996r "The Power of the Dream" w wykonaniu Celine Dion.Wcześniej skomponował "Winter Games" ,muzyczny temat Igrzysk zimowych w Calgary w 1988r.
