Pastels

Grupa szkocka założona w Glasgow w 1982, prekursorska w ramach nurtu "shambling/anorak", którego późniejszymi luminarzami byli Flamates i Talulah Gosh. Założycielem zespołu był Stephen Pastel (właśc. Stephen McRobbie; gitara, śpiew), który z czasem odszedł daleko od swoich wczesnych dni i idoli. Obecnie Pastels patronują nowym szkockim grupom (Teenage Fanclub, Captain America/Eugenius). Dzieje zespołu ilustruje najlepiej dewiza lidera: "Sądzę, że kariera i czysta ambicja są wredne". Debiutowali w stylu łączącym Monkees i Ramones. W skład oprócz lidera wchodzili Brian Superstar (właśc. Brian Taylor; gitara) i Chris Gordon (perkusja), którego szybkie odejście zapowiadało ciągłe kłopoty z pozyskaniem stabilnej sekcji rytmicznej.
Pierwsze nagranie, czwórka "Songs For Children", dla wytwórni Whaam! (późniejsze dla Glass, Rough Trade i Creation) otworzyło im drogę na rynek niezależny. Na albumach Up For A Bit With The Pastels i Sittin' Pretty (drugie dla sponsorowanej przez tygodnik "New Musical Express" wytwórni Chapter 22) występowali w składzie: Pastel, Superstar, Aggi Wright (śpiew), Martin Hayward (bas) i Bernice Swanson (perkusja).
Naiwność pierwszych nagrań ustąpiła z czasem miejsca stylistycznej mieszaninie, nad którą czuwało jednak ucho i ręka McRobbiego (tematy "Nothing To Be Done", "Baby Honey","Ditch the fool").Z zespołem współpracowali m.in. Eugene Kelly (wcześniej Vaselines),Norman Blake i David Keegan (poprzednio w Shop Assistants). Ostatni z nich został z początkiem lat 90. pełnoprawnym członkiem zespołu.
Z kolejnego personalnego chaosu wyłonił się trzyosobowy skład: McRobbie, Wright (bas), Katrina Mitchell (perkusja), grająca równocześnie w Melody Dog. Wbrew pesymistycznym prognozom, album Mobile Safari z 1995 był ciekawą kolekcją prezentującą wzloty i upadki niedocenianej grupy ("Yoga", "Classic Lineup").
