Po okresie wystepów w rozgłośni WLW w Cincinnati przenosi się do radia WJR w Detroit i pozostawał tam aż do podpisania umowy z Pleasant Valley Boys grupą Ernie Leesa w 1944r.Gra w niej do 1946r,do momentu sformowania własnego zespołu,Jay-Bird Trio.
Dwa lata póżniej przystępuje do grupy Reda Foley'a i bierze udział w sesji nagraniowej dla King Records.W tym samym roku wydaje pierwsze swoj single "Mountain Mambo" pod pseudonimem Jerry Robin i "Sun Shadows".Rok póżniej trafia na rynek jego debiutancki album "Steelin' the Blues".Podczas współpracy z wytwórnią King nagrywa też hawajskie piosenki,które niedługo staną się jego podstawowym repertuarem.
Byrd ciągle pozostaje aktywną postacią w światku country;występuje od
1950r regularnie w telewizyjnym show Reda Foley'a ,nadawanym przez NBC.W
latach 1954-1956 daje serię koncertów w Nashville pod szyldem Home
Folks.W 1968r na dobre opuszcza estradę,przenosząc się na Hawaje.
