Utwór ten niespodziewanie został wielkim przebojem w USA i w Wielkiej Brytanii.
Nagrał wówczas takie przeboje, jak Shame on You, Detroit City, 500 Miles from Home, Four Strong Winds i M'iller's Cave, które utrzymywały wysokie pozycje na listach przebojów country i pop. Pierwszą nagrodę Grammy otrzymał w 1963 za nagranie piosenki Detroit City .W 1965 zagrał główną rolę w westernie A Distant Trumpet.
W latach 60. i 70-tych pomagał młodym, utalentowanm muzykom. Protegował Billy'ego Joe Shavera, pomógł się przebić takim autorom piosenek jak Mickey Newbury i Kris Kristofferson, docenił wielki talent Shela Silversteina, z którym później współpracował i nagrywał płyty. Najważniejszą z nich była Bobby Bare Sings Lullabies, Legends and Lies z 1975, jedna z pierwszych określanych mianem "płyta koncepcyjna". Zawierała bowiem dobrane według określonego pomysłu piosenki, układające się w tematyczną i muzyczną całość. Rok później przeniósł się do wydawnictwa Columbia i nagrał krążek Bare, przy współudziale m.in. Waylona Jenningsa, Williego Nelsona, Dra Hooka i Cheta Atkinsa.
Dwa lata później nagrał, z udziałem multiinstrumentalisty i producenta muzycznego Rodneya Crowella, Sleeper Wheneuer I Fall, płytę zawierającą m.in. takie wersje piosenek rockowych, jak The Last Time zespołu The Rolling Stones i Feel a Whole Lot Better z repertuaru The Byrds. Kolejna znacząca płyta Bare to As Is, na którą złożyły się kompozycje Townesa Van Zandta, J.J. Cale'a i Guya Clarka.
