Choć zaczął nagrywać w 1953 roku, pierwszy większy przebój zanotował w 1959 r. kiedy podjął współpracę kompozytorską z Clydem Otisem i Belfordem Hendricksem. Nagranie "It's Just A Matter Of Time" doszło do 3. miejsca w amerykańskiej Top 10 i zapoczątkowało znakomitą serie sukcesów obejmującą takie hity jak: "So Many Ways"(z 1959 r.), "The Boll Weevil Song" (z 1961 r.) i "Hotel Happiness" (z 1962 r.).
Zaśpiewane w duecie z Dinah Washington piosenki "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)", sprzedana w milionie kopii, i "A Rockin' Good Way (To Mess Around And Fall In Love)" znalazły się na szczycie rhythm'n' bluesowej listy przebojów.
