Odkrył go disc-jockey z Bostonu Jack McDermott,który napisaną przez Freddyego i jego matkę piosenkę "Rock' n' roll baby" przekazał producentom Bobowi Crewe Frankowi Slaye.Ci dwaj ulepszyli ją ;nadali jej nowy tytuł "Tallahassee Lassie" i wkrótce stała się światowym hitem.Zmienili też nazwisko Freddy' emu na Cannon.
Utwór ten stał się jednym z 21 hitów jakie w ciągu pięciu lat wylansował Cannon w Stanach Zjednoczonych.
Jego jedyny album na listach przebojów to "The Explosive!Freddy Cannon" [1 miejsce w Anglii w 1960r].Był to zresztą pierwszy w historii LP rockowy notowany na liście przebojów.
Nagrywał w swej długiej karierze dla Warner Bros,Buddah,Claridge,MCA i innych.
Powrócił w 1981r na listy wraz z grupą Diona The Belmonts piosenką "Let' s put the fun back into rock' n' roll".
