LL zadebiutował w 1984 r. maksisinglem "I Need A Beat", jednak dopiero "I Just Can't Live Without My Radio" ustalił jego wizerunek w stylu b-boy.
Napisał on dla tria piosenkę "Can You Rock It Like This", która znalazła się na płycie King of Rock.
Potem nastąpiła udana seria nagrań funk-rapowych, będących przekładańcem postawy machismo, osobistego uroku i humoru.
Artysta robił wszystko, żeby zmienić opinię o sobie - pojawił się m.in. w akcji humanitarnej Farm Aid, nagrywał z chórem The Peace Choir i wydał kasetę "Cool School Video Program", która miała zachęcić dzieci do kontynuowania nauki. Sama Nancy Reagan zaproponowała mu prowadzenie koncertu pod hasłem "Just Say No" "Poprostu powiedz nie" w Radio City Musie Hall.
Pod względem muzycznym Coola najlepiej charakteryzuje wydany w 1990 r. album Mama Said Knock You Out, wyprodukowany przez wszechobecnego Marleya Marla (potrójna platynowa płyta). Z całego zestawu wyróżniało się nagranie "A Little Something", z samplem soulowego przeboju "Groove Me" Kinga Floyda. Cool wystąpił w filmach "The Hard Way" i "Toys" -w pierwszym zagrał policjanta, a w drugim żołnierza. Jest także gospodarzem własnego programu telewizyjnego "In The House".
