W połowie lat 70. wokalista zarejestrował na swoim koncie dwa przeboje numer l: "Gonna Make You A Star" i "Hold Me Close", a trzy jego propozycje: "Lamplight", "Stardust" i "Rollin' Stone" trafiły do Top 10.
Tracił też powoli pozycję idola nastolatek, co rekompensowały mu coraz poważniejsze role, m.in. partia Che Guevary w musicalu "Evita". Pochodzący z tego spektaklu utwór "Oh What A Circus" trafił też do Top 5 brytyjskiej listy przebojów.
Bożonarodzeniowy przebój "A Winter's Tale" zaprowadził go ponownie na listy przebojów; podobny sukces odniósł utwór "Tahiti". Ten drugi był zwiastunem najbardziej ambitnego projektu Essexa - musicalu "Mutiny" (opartego na "Mutiny On The Bounty", historii XVII-wiecznego buntu marynarzy na statku "Bounty", która cieszyła się wielkim zainteresowaniem filmowców i została trzykrotnie przeniesiona na ekran. W kolejnych wersjach występowali m.in. Clark Gable, Marion Brando i Mel Gibson).
