Harold Arlen

 Harold Arlen (ur. jako Hyman Arluck; 15 lutego 1905r - zm. 23 kwietnia 1986r), amerykański kompozytor muzyki popularnej,  napisał ponad 500 piosenek, z których wiele stało się znanych na całym świecie.
 Arlen urodził się w Buffalo w stanie Nowy Jork , Stany Zjednoczone,jako dziecko żydowskiego kantora . Jego brat bliźniak zmarł następnego dnia. Uczył się gry na fortepianie w młodości i utworzył  jako młody człowiek zespół. Osiągnął  miejscowy sukces jako pianista i piosenkarz  i przeniósł się do Nowego Jorku w  wczesnych latach 20-tych. Pracował jako akompaniator w wodewilu. W tym momencie,   zmienił swoje nazwisko na Harold Arlen. W latach 1926-1934, Arlen pojawił się okazjonalnie jako wokalista zespołu na nagraniach The Buffalodians , Reda Nicholsa , Joe Venutiego , Leo Reismana i Eddie Duchina , zwykle śpiewajac własne kompozycje.

Działał początkowo jako pianista oraz śpiewak w nocnych lokalach, następnie jako aranżer; założył zespół jazzowy, z którym występował w Buffalo i w Nowym Jorku. Od 1930 roku odnosił sukcesy na Broadwayu jako autor piosenek kompozycji tanecznych oraz musicali. W latach 1930-1943 działał w Hollywood, jako, kompozytor muzyki filmowej. Wróciwszy w 1944 roku do Nowego Jorku, współpracował stale z teatrem na Broadwayu oraz sporadycznie z wytwórniami filmowymi w Hollywood. Jest twórcą takich musicali jak You Said It (1931), Life Begins at 8:40 (1934), Hoorey for What? (1937) i komedii muzycznych Bloomer Girl (1944), House of Flowers (1954), Jamaica (1957), oraz opery bluesowej Free and Easy (wystawionej w Paryżu w 1959, przeróbka utworu St. Louis Woman z 1946 roku). 
Współpracował z najlepszymi autorami tego czasu jak Ted Koehler, Johnny Mercer, , E.Y. Harburg. Z jego największych przebojów warto przypomnieć "Beetwen the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea", "Stormy Weather" (słynne wykonanie Duke'a Ellingtona i jego zespołu), "Fall in Love", "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe", "Over the Rainbow", "Blues in the Night", "That Old Black Magic".
