Pierwszym przebojem Heaven 17 na rynku brytyjskim był taneczny „(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang”, który dotarł do 45. miejsca notowań. Pod koniec 1981r formacja wydala doskonale sprzedający się album Penthouse And Pavement, oddający wyśmienicie hedonistyczny nastrój owych czasów. Trio brało potem udział w różnych innych projektach BEF, dawało występy gościnne i od czasu do czasu nagrywało.
W maju 1983 grupa osiągnęła szczyt popularności elektryzującym utworem „Temptation", w którym gościnnie zaśpiewała Carol Kenyon. Ukazała się potem cała seria albumów; Heaven 17 była zawsze formacją studyjną, a pod szyldem tym uruchamiano też nieregularnie eksperymenty z różnymi nowymi pomysłami. Członkowie grupy byli też poszukiwanymi producentami - Ware pracował m.in. nad udanym albumem Terence’a Trenta D’Arby’ego The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby.
W 1991 Marsh i Ware nagrali kolejny ambitny album pod szyldem BEF zawierający własne wersje utworów znanych wykonawców, a w 1996 zaskoczyli odbiorców nowym albumem Heaven 17.
