Cat Stevens

 Właśc. Steven Demetri Georgiou, ur. 21.07.1947 r. w Londynie. Ciągle poszukiwania sensu istnienia, wyrażane w jego tekstach i udzielanych wywiadach oraz zaangażowanie w religię islamu było charakterystyczne dla tego popularnego i cenionego piosenkarza i kompozytora. Swoim odejściem z muzycznego biznesu zamanifestował negatywny stosunek do "świata pełnego grzechu i chciwości" i całkowicie poświęcił się wierze przyjmując imię Yusuf Islam. Jego ponadczasowe przeboje pozostają do dziś dla wielu klasyką muzyki pop.

 

W 1966 r. producent Mike Hurst odkrył talent Cata podczas występu w londyńskim Hammersmith College i był pod tak wielkim wrażeniem, że zorganizował mu nagranie piosenki "I Love My Dog". Tony Hall z Decca Records również wyrażał się o artyście z uznaniem i wkrótce Stevens został pierwszym wykonawcą nowo powstałej wytwórni Deram (podległej Decce).
 

Debiutancki singel Cata zawierał utwory "I Love My Dog" i "Portobello Road", i przyniósł artyście pierwszy znaczący sukces. W ciągu następnych dwóch lat Stevens nagrał wiele znakomitych piosenek. Niektóre z nich wykonywał sam ("Matthew And Son", "I Am Gonna Get Me A Gun", "Bad Night"), lecz w kolejce po jego kompozycje ustawiali się także inni znani wykonawcy, wśród których znaleźli się m.in. P.P. Arnold ("First Cut Is The Deepest") i The Tremelos ("Here Comes My Baby"). Dwa albumy, nagrane dla firmy Decca, zawierały kolekcje krótkich, chwytliwych piosenek, a jedynym ich mankamentem był nieco staroświecki akompaniament. W międzyczasie Stevens zachorował na gruźlicę i musiał się poddać długotrwałemu leczeniu. Podczas rekonwalescencji przemyślał dokładnie swoje dotychczasowe życie.
 

Następne 11 albumów, nagranych w ciągu 8 lat, przepełniały refleksja i smutek, które wnikliwy słuchacz mógł dostrzec z łatwością. Pierwszym z tej serii był longplay Mona Bone Jakon, potem ukazały się dwa znakomite tytuły Tea For The Tillerman i Teaser And The Firecat. Ukazywały one oblicze samotnego kompozytora, który pozwala swojemu słuchaczowi wejść w jego intymny świat myśli, pragnień i nadziei. Stevens był mistrzem tego gatunku, napisał wiele naiwnie prostych, ale pięknych piosenek, wśród których znalazły się: "Wild Worid", "Peace Train", "Moon Shadow" i miłosne "Lady D'Arbanville", "Hard Headed Woman" i "Can't Keep It In".
 

Największym atutem artysty były utwory aluzyjne na temat religii, wątpliwości i sceptycyzmu. Do najlepszych należą dwa: "Father And Son" i "Sitting". Pierwszy jest dialogiem pomiędzy ojcem a synem, ukazującym obraz samotnego dzieciństwa spędzonego w Soho; "Sitting" z kolei mówi o sile nadziei. Oba są wstrząsające i wywierają duże wrażenie prawie na każdym, kto je usłyszał - zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do osobistych problemów Stevensa.
 

W tym okresie osiem albumów artysty uzyskało tytuł "złotej płyty", 10 singli gościło na topie brytyjskiej listy przebojów, a 14 w USA. W 1981 r. wycofał się z muzycznego biznesu. Od tej pory działa aktywnie jako nauczyciel i propagator islamu. W 1991 r. przed konfliktem w Zatoce Perskiej pojechał do Bagdadu, by apelować o uwolnienie zakładników. Później został przewodniczącym związku wyznawców islamu z Północnego Londynu. Nie powinniśmy zarzucać Stevensowi, że porzucił muzykę, lecz raczej powinniśmy być mu wdzięczni za ogromny zbiór znakomitych nagrań, które nam pozostawił. W 1995 r. zaproponował swoją nową płytę - podwójny album z... cytatami z Koranu w jego recytacji.
