Archie Bell & The Drells

Archie Bell & The Drells to zespół założony przez brata słynnego futbolisty amerykańskiego Ricky Bella,Archie w 1966r z czteroma kolegami ze szkoły Leo Smith Junior High w Houston.Początkowo chcieli nazywać się Dells,ale zrezygnowali ze względu na istniejącą już grupę z Harvey.

Początkowo skład grupy zmieniał się często by w końcu ukonstytuować się jako:Bell,James Wise,Joe Cross i Huey "Billy" Butler,biorąc regularnie udział w konkursach dla młodych talentów.Tam właśnie nawiązali kontakt z prezenterem rozgłośni KCOH Skippera Lee Fraziera,który załatwił im kontrakt z wytwórnią Ovid.
 

Mimo,.ze członkowie zespołu byli tylko wokalistami,wspierali też w studio muzyków sesyjnych.Bell był zdeterminowany by Drells nie był tylko synonimem słodkiego i harmonijnego śpiewu,jak większość ówczesnych grup.Skierował swoje zdolności kompozytorskie ku tematom związanym z polityką.Niewielki lokalny sukces piosenką "She's my woman,she's my girl" nagraną dla East West,został przerwany powołaniem do wojska.

Bell na początku 1967r trafia na front wietnamski.Podczas krótkiego urlopu Bella nagrywają swój nastepny singiel "Tighten up".Wydany przez Ovid lokalny hit grudnia 1967r,przejęła do dystrybucji Atlantic co pomogło mu wejść w marcu następnego roku na ogólnokrajową listę hitów.Sprzedano ponad 3mln egzemplarzy płyty,a album towarzyszący przebojowi znalazł się w Top20 listy Billboard.
 

Grupa bez Bella,który w tym czasie wylądował w szpitalu wojskowym w Niemczech odbyła turnee z Jamesem Wise jako wiodącym wokalistą i Charlesem Gibbsem.Podczas koncertów w New Jersey członkowie grupy spotkali duet sławnych producentow-Leona Huffa i Kennetha Gamble'a,którzy zaproponowali im sesje nagraniową w studiach Atlantic w Nowym Jorku.Tam powstały nagrania "I can't stop dancing","Do the choo choo" i w styczniu 1969r -"There's gonna be a showdown",które trafiły na listy przebojów rhythm'n'bluesowych.
 

Bell ostatecznie zerwał z wojskiem w kwietniu 1969r i wrócił do swojej grupy by nagrać pod okiem Gamble'a i Huffa swój najlepszy album "I can't stop dancing".Powrócili na listy przebojów rok póżniej singlem "Wrap it up",coverem piosenki Sama & Dave, wyprodukowanym przez Davida Crawforda;ostatnim wydanym dla wytwórni Atlantic.
 

Przez dwa następne lata grupa funkcjonowała na obrzeżu muzycznych wydarzeń,mimo wszystko regularnie koncertując minn. w W.Brytanii,wydając tam singla "Here I go again" w 1972r.Po tym jak ich kontrakt z Atlantic wygasł zespół przeszedł do Glades Records w 1973r.

W tym samym roku nagranie "Dancing to your music" odniosło sukces na listach bestsellerów,ale gdy pod koniec roku singiel "Girls grow up faster than boys" poniósł porażkę,odnowili współpracę z Gamble i Huffem oraz podpisali kontrakt nagraniowy z TSOP.Razem z firmowymi muzykami Philly -Instant Funk nagrali w połowie 1975r niewielki hit "I could dance all night",który okazał się ostatnim.Bell kontynuował krótko karierę solową nagrywając dla Becket Records.
